On the 28th December 1915 work started on the construction of wooden huts. The first buildings to be erected were for the personnel and their airships and balloons. These were sited just west of the village of Cranwell, near Sleaford, Lincolnshire.
The buildings were to become a predominate feature on the landscape of Lincolnshire when the station opened on 1st April 1916 as the RNAS Training Establishment, known as HMS Daedalus, to become later during the 20th century as RAF Cranwell.
Aviation writer, Cliff Clover, the author of "Zeppelins over the Easter Counties" published by Barney Books, saw his first airship in 1936. This was the famous Hindenburg which was surveying the east of England. Being fascinated by Zeppelins ever since, he has done a life-long study of the dirigible air war of WW1 which has made him an expert on the German use of strategic air power in its infancy.
Cliff has been invited to Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre, Lincoln, on Wednesday, 25th July, to speak about his passion for airships. His theme will be Zeppelins at War.
This will be held in the WW2 gymnasium and begins at 7.30pm. Admission is free to Friends of Metheringham Airfield and 106 Squadron Association members.
To visitors, the entry fee is £3.00 which includes refreshments.
This is going to be a fascinating lecture accompanied by graphic slides and should be a piece of history to be remembered by and looked at.
