GALA TO UNITE WEST END'S TOWN AND GOWN
Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 07:30
Residents and students will be encouraged to set aside their differences at a Lincoln autumn gala.
The event, which is being planned for Sunday, September 27, could see residents of the Carholme area of Lincoln join with their student neighbours for a day of festivities.
And all residents could enjoy a visit from the animals at the White Post Farm Centre in Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire, as well as football training, face painting and a bouncy castle.
The main part of the event would be staged at the children's centre next to St Faith and St Martin Junior School in West Parade, Lincoln.
The gala is the brainchild of Carholme ward councillor Karen Lee.
She stressed that the event is in the early stages and will only go ahead if she can secure funding.
"It's an event to promote community cohesion," she said.
"We've deliberately picked that date because it falls at the end of Freshers' Week at the university. It'll be nice for new students to meet their neighbours."
The University of Lincoln and the Students' Union have given their full support to the gala.
Vicky Wieczerzynska, welfare and liaison officer at the students' union, said the event should help residents to meet one another.
"Of course there's a big student population in this area of the city so this event will be a great opportunity for students and other residents to get to know each other better," she said.
"This can only be a good thing for community relations."
Anyone who wants to assist in the funding or organisation of the event should contact Karen Lee on (01522) 546065 or e-mail karen.lee@lincoln.gov.uk
