This is for those interested - enjoy a day out!
Not many people can remember the sights and sounds of the 1940s, so Friends of Metheringham Airfield have organised an event which will take people back to that era.
To taste the nostalgic atmosphere, former RAF Metheringham, wartime home to the famous 106 Squadron, is opeing its gates to those who wish to go back in time to relive what remains part of a genuine World War two airfield where Lancaster bombers flew from.
This special Open Day is on Sunday, 3rd May, during the first May Bank holiday.
Visitors will experience what it was like to be caught in a bombing raid, with sound affects, by the German Air Force in the last remaining air raid shelter sited on the airfield. They will be able to visit parts of the airfield which are not normally open or can be viewed by the public. This treat is by a 1940s vintage coach.
Personal from nearby RAF Digby will be bringing with them their WW2 Operations Room exhibition which depicts how the bomber airfields were protected by the fighter station.
A number of military vehicles from the war period will be on display for people to view, sit in, and to be photographed with. Walking about the venue will be those dressed up military and civvi style taking visitors back to the war years.
With the 1940s schoolroom now completed, children can taste what it was like to be at school.
Together with a host of displays and exhibitions, this should be a day to remember with lots to see and to remember. To top it up and weather permiitting, the Battle of Britian Memmorial Flight Lancaster from RAF Coningsby will be giving a special flying display for all to see, experience, and to enjoy.
There will be all-day refreshments and one must come and taste the Lincolnshire sausage which will be specially cooked by "Christine" and which has yet to be recognised by the European Union Commission.
The gates will open at 10.30am and admission is £7.00 per car.
