Wasps do get more aggressive towards the end of the summer. Generally if there is/was a nest the wasps have a route that they follow practically the same every time so you would have seen them entering and exiting a particular spot. They do not stick with building up high. I had a tall pot that had a disc part way down as it ws a waste to fill the whole thing with soil and somehow they knew this and burrowed through the soil and built a nest hanging under the disc! Another time they found sufficient loose mortar/lack of insulation(!!) and started on the house wall. At first I thought they're no bother, they have a straight path that follows the fence and isn't where I sit but the man from the council warned me that they would become aggressive as the season progressed so I bought some wasp nest killer. It's a powder squirter and was instantly effective. That said, I've had none this year.
