Hi,

sorry for the long delay in replying!

I did enquire with the big wigs in Virgin Media and basically the situation is that:

1. the existing cable ends at the beginning of the estate it runs all down Long Leys Road but apparantly the builders never invested in the cable or labour to install it.

2. It would cost somewhere in the region of £185k (apparantly) for Virgin to come and lay cabling all throughout the estate, which is something they are not prepared to do.

3. Internet speeds vary wildly through the estate, i live on the corner of Harricot Close and through tweaking and trying master sockets, different flters and routers I can get my internet connection upto 4mb but it is very unstable. Therefore we live with 2Mb. However there are people lower down on the estate which can consistently get 5Mb (so I have been told) and are not heavy users therefore are not too bothered about there connection.

4. According to a BT engineer we had out to sort our line a year ago the wiring in this estate doesnt seem to be of 'great' quality and therefore speeds can vary widly from one property to another.

5. We did have another user on here look at the viability of unbundling the cabinet at the end of the estate to allow us to increase our speed, but this turned out to be too costly.

However there is some light at the end of the tunnel, Virgin Media did put me in touch with their marketing man and we went through a strategy of marketing in the area as if I could get a certain percentage of the local population to pre-sign up to Virgin Media then they would consider laying the cables. This would basically mean leaflet drops, door to door discussions etc to try and get as many people as prssible to join up! I scrapped this as I was busy at the time but if this is something you believe strongly in then prmme and we can discuss ways forward?

Cheers

Matt

TYPICAL Just get the roads & paths to an acceptable standard after the 3rd attempt and now a utility company would like to rip it up if there is enough demand. Should have been installed 10 years ago when the estate was first created.

There is nothing wrong with BT Braodband/ Vision on this estate, the engineer told me the distance from the main exchange, tweeked something in the exchange, fitted an accelerator to the main extension box incoming into the property and bingo, plenty of mega whotsits and quality TV to boot.

Tell Virgin Media to shove their cables ELSEWHERE !!!!!!!

.. Steve this is not the case.. a simple tweak in the exchange will not increase the BB speed..
Fact. For Telephone Number 01522****** on Exchange LINCOLN
Your exchange is ADSL2+ enabled the line test indicates that the line currently supports a broadband line speed of 2Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 1Mbps and 3.5Mbps.

in this day and age 1Mbps and 3.5Mbps is very poor. Virgin media would be able to run anything from 10Mbps to 100mbps on fibre lines.. So I think it would be a fantastic idea for this to happen.. It wouldn’t mess the roads and paths up, there is already underground ducting in the ground it would be a simple case of pulling a new cable through and a small dig at each end.

This would benefit the whole estate so much, from single people to medium and large families. I think everyone will know that when using more than 1 device the BB speed is so slow sometime even impossible to use… and plus Virgin media can supply Broadband only without the need for a telephone.. So for people who don’t use there phone and only have it for the sake of broadband this would also be a cost saving switch.

Virgin media do not cap their speeds at peak times unlike most BB providers and if you pay for 10mbps BB you get 10 mbps almost bang on.. It is never an ‘’up to speed’’

Matt_lincoln I think it would be a fantastic idea for this to happen, I think once people know what benefits are and what the cost savings will be I think a lot of people would consider to changing suppliers

I was told the only ducts that go past our property belong to BT, connecting between THEIR manholes.
