the alternative masterplan for the west common

Postby Neville » Mon Jul 26, 2010 11:15 am

this was sent to me today and cheered me up a great deal. should be what lincoln city council should be doing and forget about leasing the land to a racing company for private development.
any comments from residents!

The Proposed Masterplan for the Lincoln West Common will:

¿ To redefine how the West common is seen by the people of Lincoln, to provide an outstanding area of high quality green space that can be enjoyed by all
¿ Set out a Strategic Master plan to regenerate, reinvigorate and breathe new life into what is currently an uninspiring landscape

¿ reinforce local identity and enhance the physical character of the common, so shaping existing and future development

¿ maintain the visual amenity and increase the attractiveness of the locality to create a sense of civic pride

¿ raise property values and aid urban regeneration and Neighbourhood Renewal

¿ boost the economic potential of tourism, leisure and cultural activities

¿ provide a wide variety of cultural, social and community facilities, including seasonal activities such as fairs, festivals and concerts

¿ protect the historical, cultural and archaeological heritage

¿ illustrate and educate the contribution to health agendas eg. Reducing stress levels, by providing formal and informal recreational facilities

¿ provide popular outdoor educational facilities for schools and academic institutions

¿ improve physical and social inclusion including accessibility, particularly for young, disabled and older people

¿ offer alternative routes for circulation, including networks for walking and cycling and safer routes to school

¿ protect and enhance levels of biodiversity and ecological habitats

¿ provide environmental infrastructure toimprove water quality and flood control.

Neville, you may have struck gold here. I'm not sure this is an alternative at all, this looks like a first draft of the land grab we have all been suspecting.

It looks to me like it involves the total commercialisation of West Common, with the Racecourse a big & integral part of it.

Lots of smart looking stuff, but at the heart, a racecourse.

Lucid Landscapes, 5 miles from Carol Bowman, and 1.5 miles from Metrea, the LRRC webmaster. Coincidence?

Apparently, it has nothing to do with LRRC:

Sheffield-based company Lucid Landscapes presented an alternative masterplan for developing the Lincoln West Common. The plans are independent of the widely debated proposal to reinstate flat racing on the West Common from the Lincoln Racecourse Regeneration Company (LRRC).

Alongside a horse racing track and a revamp of the Grandstand (click image above to enlarge), Lucid Landscape’s designs include sports and recreation facilities, a music stage, a wooded area, a bridge across the A57 connecting both parts of the West Common, and even a large wind turbine.

Some more explanations I dug out at: http://thelincolnite.co.uk/bepsp

It may well be totally independent. I do retain a degree of mistrust, the Sheffield connection is a strange co-incidence, those involved with LRRC are all claiming that they are not being paid, and most importantly the racecourse is a central part of this alternative plan.

It looks a very naive plan in the current economic climate, but looks part of an approach to test the water several months ago.
