Removal of Trees at NHS Headquarters

Postby ES » Thu Jul 02, 2009 8:24 pm

Some time ago I thought I read about tree preservation orders on certain trees at the NHS building on Long Leys road.

I was sorry to see one of the large trees cut down a couple of weeks ago, and tonight I see that the remaining large tree is also being cut down.

Can anyone shed any light ? It's a great shame that such impressive trees are being cut down.

ES I have already contacted the council asking why and whether there will be replacements - will let you know the reply. You are right about the TPOs, a couple of years ago I requested that as many as possible had notices.

Reply from Tracey Lynn at City Council:

... we were asked to consider these 2 trees for protection under a Tree Preservation Order, 1 Copper Beech and 1 Poplar. The City Council Arboricultural Officer inspected the trees and it was decided that due to safety issues with the trees we would not consider them for protection. The hospital are going to replace the trees with 1 Extra Heavy Beech tree within the same location and there is also an established Yew tree that will now thrive due to the trees being removed.

It is a real shame about the copper beech but it is true that the planting was very close and some of the others will now thrive with more light and space.

The two trees near to the bus shelter, one has been removed due to being a graft of the other tree. The branches from each tree has grown interlinked with each other and became heavy in growth causing the trunks and the trees themselves to bend, going towards Long Leys Road.
The second tree is being cut down gradually. This tree had been hit by lightning twice over a number of years. While it is standing one can see where one lightning hit has struck.
Its appearance at the moment looks lop sided. Whether the road will be closed for its removal awaits to be seen. Hopefully, there will be no high winds coming our way.
