New turf on Manrico Drive

Postby emmagary » Thu Apr 03, 2008 7:02 pm

Hello, I came home today to find new lovely lush turf in the border outside my house on Manrico Drive. I am not complaining as it looks a lot better than the dead brown stuff that was trying to pass for grass before but I cant help but wonder why it has been replaced. Is it either that the council found a bit of spare money and thought they would do a bit of gardening or, is it something connected to the cemetry. I just wondered as the grass had died because when it rained it seemed to get a bit waterlogged (as does my garden) and this would surely show bad drainage to those people who are coming to inspect the drainage on and around the proposed site.
If anyone knows please fill me in as would love to know

Many thanks :D

Hi emmagary

I'm glad youve brought this up. I've watched this grass die over a very long period of time. Two weeks ago, i spot treated some weeds with roundup in my garden. The grass round the edge of the weeds is completely dead now (but not the weed  ) So this has made me very suspicious and I think you've raised a very good point. Are they trying to cover up this water logging problem by saying its been killed off on purpose? :?

Emma, can I direct you to the thread 'Landscaping/Kids' Areas' where all is written - it was killed deliberately. If you ever want the facts, post or contact the LLRA and they will try and find out for you. We have reps on roads, drains, footpaths, SEC, landscaping, cemetery, steps, hospital, benches etc and they each have contacts with the relevant folk.

Pete has one theory though and another resident was told that the builders had simply run out of money and gone. I am sure we could start up all sorts of conspiracy theories and have some fun but meanwhile, yes, it looks good and with rain forecast, even a chance that it will continue to do so. Think I'm going to change my address to POSH END - especially after they get round to my bit!!

When I say fact, I suppose what I am saying is that the info has come from the main source - appropriate department, appropriate company or though a councillor. That doesn't mean rumour should stop because they often start with a grain of fact and give reason to search out more. No this was the word of Mr Bower (Mr DW Homes for us) though actually I also saw them spraying it though didn't realise at the time they were killing it, I only thought of food or weed killer! I thought it was odd when all the public bits had died and yet all the grass of people's front gardens next to them were still green.
The plans I have Iggy are stamped by planning 14 Nov 2003 for H Boot Homes Ltd.

Many thanks for all the replies, it is a lot nicer to see green grass than brown grass. :D

Thanks emmagary,

I agree nice green grass is better. I've made a right pigs ear of mine! Quite what the neighbours think, god only knows!

Right, i'm off to talk to the spies in the bushes to conjure up some more conspiracy theories.

I'd heard that because of the need for disabled access there was to be a funicular railway link from the top of the estate with access via the Burton Road allotment entrance. The Community Travel Zone would fund part of it but a dry ski slope would increase provision of outdoor activity year round so that it would be self funding within a short time but funding available for young people to improve their area would manage it meanwhile.
Is anyone going to speak up for the newts?

Enjoy the new turf while you can - spotted a long vehicle turning out of Benbow into Manrico today and it bumped over the kerb. :(

Guess when the builders lorries start trundling down the route to build the new Secure Unit at the bottom of Benbow, they'll be cutting the corner too and we'll be back to square one! A nice rockery feature of big boulders on the corner of the Manrico/Benbow grass verge might do the trick......

as the roads were set out at planning stage for possible future housing developments taking place on the hospital site . we all know there is a dangerous and accident waiting to happen stretch of road on carram up to manrico[to narrow / blind bend with the amount of cars parked on it ] .i feel this is caused by the lack of forward planning at design stage of the development, and the changes that the planning department at city hall have let happen with no master plan for the development . that is history now but i think its time now to go back to city hall and point out and point a few of the issues in this area with the roads and try and sort some of them out
1 --change of use from a small community shop with very limited parking needs [ say 2 full time staff and very short term parking needs] to a business which looks to me to have 5 /6 full time staff resulting in long term parking needs for them and also possible 4/5 customers at any one time ; this may mean up to say 10 cars per hour WITH ONLY 2 SPOTS PROVIDED
2 -- the unfinished state of the roads in the area resulting in cars parking there insted of being parked outside houses [should get better if roads sorted out
3--4 flats above the shop with possible 8 cars[ or more if bigger than one bedroom ] 4 SPOTS PROVIDED
4-- VERY laze hospital staff who park in this area insted of using car parking provided on site
5-- a very strange and totally non acseptible planning decision as it has now turned out to be' which allows all the traffic to the hospital to go through a housing development for up to 800 meters [possibly 300 to 400 vehicles per day not just cars for staff but delivers as well visitors
if a roundabout was constructed on long leys road at the junction with carram' this could sort out a lot of the problems in this area . it would help stop the speeding problem on long leys . with would help in providing a safe crossing point .it would give the hospital an entrance onto there site, this would to allow them to amend there road layout to stop having to go through a housing estate . a limited time parking bay could be built on long leys for the *shop* PLUS access to the proposed community hall or shopping mall [only joking ]provided off this junction as well
PS and thanks to deb i can sit on the bench and watch it being built

Would it not be possible for the hosptial construction traffic to use the main entrance off Long Leys Road? When will we see an end to this construction traffic nightmare?

The hosptial are the ones having construction and building work done. I dont think it would be too much to ask them to use this enterance as our estate is looking quite tidy now and its not fare on those living on Manrico and Benbow to have construction traffic when our estate has been completed. We've all lived with construction traffic for years and years. Just when we thought it would end some more starts i.e hospital, cemetery and they should take the residents into consideration.
