New pipe work system under Long Leys Road

Postby Jeff » Thu Mar 10, 2011 7:52 pm

Mr Shipton has kindly updated me about the new water pipe being laid under Long Leys Road. It began 28th February finishing 4.30pm Friday 11th March. Then the pipework is being laid from Monday right across the common onto Carholme Road.
Since the work began there has been a water leak on the road alongside AW Curtis. It was thought that the contractors would repair this. Balfour Beatty are the contractors doing this pipework work for Anglian Water. They never reported the leak to Anglian Water as they are only contracted to do the pipe work. The responsiblity of reporting the leak lies with the public. Mr Shipton reported the leak at 7.30pm Wednesday 9th March per my telephone call to Anglian Water today. Anglian Water was supposed to mark where the leak is by spraying blue paint onto the road on an urgent visit today. Nothing has happened. If it not repaired tomorrow ie 11th March, it will be done next week. Then it will mean digging up Long Leys Road again.
My question is - why can't the contractors be told to do the repair before they start digging up the West Common? It does not make sense. Do other residents feel that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing? I have been told that Mr Shipton has now reported the matter the councillor Robert Parker who is aware also about the temporary traffic light failure on Long Leys Road on Saturday morning which caused traffic problems.

The temporary traffic light problem last Saturday morning was due to some thieving barstewards stealing the batteries that power the traffic lights sometime overnight from Friday night to Saturday morning.
Hardly the fault of the contractors.
I'm sure if anyone has any information about this theft they will already have rung the Police.
I'm sure detective Shippo will be on the case! :)

Jeff, Rob and residents:

The contractors have finished laying down the pipework on Long Leys Road. They will be filling in the remaining trench and tarmacing over today. Next week they start trenchwork, etc across the West Common to lay down the water pipework.
Now this is interesting which people should note. The contract workers have been using the canteen at AW Curtis. They told bakery staff who asked about the water leak that it was not their problem and remit to repair it. The leak began after the contractors began to dig up the road. Curtis's did not report the leak near the factory until this morning. And neither did Balfour Beatty workers or the firm itself.
It appears that the leak is not being repaired in the foreseeable future and has been placed on the list at Anglian Water to do later. Balfour Beatty deal with such matters for Anglian Water. This means that Long Leys Road has to be dug up again.
The telephone for Anglian Water is 0800 145 145 option 1.
Their reference number is 36040889

A young child was knocked down this morning on Long Leys Road between the temporary traffic lights. Mum and her children came through the common gate and one of her children ran onto the road. This happened between 8 to 9 am. The incident number given by the police is 79. An ambulance was called and the (injured) child was taken to A/E at the county hospital together with mum and the other two children who were with her. The police attended the incident. At the same time the traffic lights were not working again due to a fault. The fault was rectified at 9.15am. These are two separate incidents.
The water leak on the road was eventually sorted out early Saturday morning after telephone calls made by the public and complaints made by county councillor Robert Parker and city councillor Karen Lee. Also with members of the public saying that they would be contacting the Lincolnshire Echo with a story about loss of water from the 28th February onwards, etc, and Balfour Beatty contractors failing to report the leak to Anglian Water.
