Matt, I'm going to take a walk at lunchtime and see if I can find them to see what is happening - and if they know the whereabouts of a large green bin. . .

Perhaps the BBC has borrowed it as a prop for the next episode of Doctor Who? Or the timelord has replaced it for his tardis having disposed the police box on the corner of the centre of the High Street? So that is why the PSCO is looking baffled on not sure what to do with it as he has no key to open the door!

men gone, equipment gone, portaloo gone - salt station not returned.

I wonder if they damaged it and took it away as 'useless'. whatever, money that is not easily come by (over £200) has been completely wasted. I will contact the council to put us back on the list for one after road adoption.

If anyone has any real idea what has happened let us know. It was a fair size and although it didn't weigh a lot you still couldn't just walk off with it. After it was moved to the back of the sub station you couldn't even see it.

Very very annoying. Time effort and grants wasted.

The riding school has gone, so has our village shop. Our promised community facilities have gone without a whisper. Our use of the West Common is now under threat of private enterprise of using it for horse racing. And why? We have a Conservative PM with our new elected Tory MP who will now proceed to change the Commons Act. And what next will be gone as with the grit bin? The former SEC site for housing development. Both politicians and councillors cannot be trusted. Ah yes! We do have a new cemetery to be built at the cost of tarmacing the Roman archaeology over. It appears that will be gone too. Not much hope for our urban village which has been a total disaster. But we older ones did warn the local residents. Back to watching the late night news about the Tories and the Lib Dems. Whats the bet that Helen Heath will allign herself with the Tories at City Council which until now she has not disclosed to the Echo and so forth. She holds the balance of power at City Council. I tried to contact her about Bakers Field. No reply.

Was the bin empty or part empty only my daughter who lives on Manrico said she had seen some young boys dragging a yellow bin along the ground from behind the sub station along with some cones.
I think therefore solely blaming workmen is a bit off the mark and would suggest the youngsters who have generated further topics of discussion on this website should be the first port of call.

Because you will never find the truth, why not assume the grit bin was damaged by a football and then discarded by the workmen !!

I have nver blamed the workmen. I wanted to find them to see what they knew as that was the last whereabouts. The bin was green not yellow and the lads used to move it and use the electricity station as the goal. I told them to put it on the grass nearest the road to save moving it (which is where it had started), however a man living nearby had told them not to put it there. I said he had no right to tell them where to put it, it's a community bin and it needs to be as close to the road as possible to use! In other words they were moving it to get it out of the way of the football but yes, who knows what happened. However it would not have been destroyed by a football and you'd think the grit would have been all over the grass. if it was damaged the workmen still should not have taken it away though.

On 10 May you asked if anyone had seen it or knew of it's whereabouts. All I was doing was trying to be helpful and passing on facts given to me.

If you were telling young lads it's ok to move it so they can play football then good luck.

But I know this much, regardless of the colour of the bin, if it had been full, no one would have moved it and it would have still been there.

Thanks Steve. It wasn't full, there was only money to cover the bottom of it with a few inches and I had no trouble moving it (it wasn't a big sturdy council one). It started off, where I put it, on the grass by the road. Maybe whoever told the lads not to put it there moved it to the electricity station wall but that was the lads 'goal' so they moved it and put it back there each time until I told them not to bother but to put it in its original position which was when they mentioned the man that said 'no'.

Anyway it's gone but if the adoption all goes through OK we will get one for the winter - budget cuts allowing of course...

Men back.. Equipment back.. Portaloo back!!! - waiting for the salt station as " Taxi's on ice " has return to the speed bump outside our house and we're waiting for one to hit our car....

Can we have the box back/replaced.. or some salt dropped off if not.. it won't damage the grass as its all churned up!

Alas no James. The council will provide a sturdy LCC bin with salt after adoption rather than the lightweight thing we were able to get but that will be for next winter rather than this. The ward budget could have supplied either a bin or a noticeboard and given that the bin will be supplied by the council but a noticeboard won't and that we do not know how ward budgets will go in the next financial year we went for the noticeboard so that in effect we will get both albeit not immediately.
However when the new budgets come through I will go ahead and request a bin early on, and, if accepted, the lightweight one could then be moved to another location on the estate and the heavier weight one, when supplied could remain in its central position. BUT, if purchasing a light weight version precludes us from a heavy weight council filled sturdy one then I will not request one because, in theory at least, there should only be six monthsish between the arrival of the two and better to wait for the much better version.

Now this may be a daft question, but is there any update on the Salt/Grit Bin ?? It would also be nice to have one on Berilldon Drive! The roads are particularly treacherous at the moment given the recent heavy snow, which is now compacted, and it's like trying to climb an uphill ice rink getting to the top of Berilldon Drive. The roads were cleared at the 'hammerhead' at the top of Berilldon Drive - many thanks to all the guys who 'did their bit'. If everyone cleared the bit of road outside their house when the snow first fell then the estate roads would be passable and we wouldn't be dreading the next snowfall that is predicted at the end of the coming week. I do understand that people are worried about being sued - but lets just let common sense prevail for once and it wouldn't be hell for everyone using the estates roads. Let's face it - how many people haven't used their cars in days because they daren't get it off the drive in case they can't get it back up the hill?? And, what about all the cars parking on Long Leys Road because they can't get back onto the estate - how much of a hazard is that when you are approaching from the town end rather than the A57 end?? You can't use the centre lane to turn right because oncoming cars are in your path!

I realise the estate still has not been adopted but surely the Council have a duty of care to salt the main incoming/outgoing road bearing in mind THIS IS A BUS ROUTE !!

I will speak with them guys. given that adoption should nearly be underway maybe they can do something a bit earlier.
Clearing the roads is a difficult one. Where do you put it - on the pavements like some have. that leaves pedestrians on the road which is mostly OK for some but IF you clear and then DON'T grit or salt its even worse after a freeze as there is nothing for your snow boots to cling to and you are on black ice.
Just getting to Higson steps from my place was a no-no so I used the green as a route - straight into dog poo. xxx those owners. Once there, it's as well there are handrails because it would be an impossible route without.
i think a request for a few bins and some gritting/salting would indeed be in order

Re: Grit - Higson Steps

Postby Yabby » Wed Dec 15, 2010 7:25 pm

Higson Steps - Now there is a subject!! It was easy to use the steps and hill when we had fresh snow - but I tried to climb it when it was compacted ice and it was almost impossible. Another uphill ice-rink!! I basically had to pull myself up using the handrail. My little feet reminded me of Fred Flintstone driving his car - they were a blur - and I wasn't really getting anywhere. I am sure that if the council put a grit bin at the top and bottom then the people who regularly use the steps (like myself) would willingly go out with a shovel and spread the grit about a bit

There has been an influx of estates all over Lincoln requesting grit bins. But the problem is when they can be provided and filled with the grit. Both councils have had problems with the grit bins that are aleady been placed at certain locations. One major problem is those who steal the grit for themselves. Many grit bags have been taken for personal usage.
This of course will have to be resolved when grit bins are established for the St Georges Park area.
PC coaches who run the St Georges bus link keep requesting for Manrico Drive to be gritted by Highways. That is why on several occassions they turned round at the bottom of the Drive and not completing the circuit. Too slippery and dangerous! This has fallen to deaf ears at County Hall. So nothing was done.
