Footpath between St Georges Park and Albion Crescent...

Postby john shipton » Mon Aug 04, 2008 8:54 pm

Residents on Albion Crescent have contacted me today concerning the state of the footpath since last week's heavy rainfall. A lot of the compressed sand has been washed away leaving just hardcore.
Mr Chris Marsh, the footpath's officer at Lincolnshire County Council, was contacted about the situation, and after visiting the footpath, has called in a surveyor to look at the problem.
Apparently the footpath was like a waterfall when it rained cats and dogs last week.
Depending on what the surveyor recommends, the missing sand may be replaced or the whole of the footpath could be re-sanded.
So it will be upto local residents to influence of what should be done next regarding this footpath, for it cost the taxpayer eleven grand for what was laid down.
His telephone number os 01522 782070.

when it rains on the new proposed cemetry the 11k cost be it a total waste for the path will be a small cost compared to this council error.

This is same type of pathway surfacing that is used successfully at Whisby Nature Park. The error here is that despite being told about the springs the go-ahead was given anyway. If the same surface is topped again what is the point, surely the proof is now there that it is not a good surface for this path. Last week you could have followed my welly prints all the way home!

The news update from the footpath's officer is that he and an technical officer from Highways at County Hall will be visiting the footpath ASAP to survey it, look at its state, what can be done to rectify the situation, and agree to what should be done in finding the right solution.
It appears that the spring waters which lie underneath the footpath, is causing the problems involved when there is heavy rainfall.
So to those residents who have building experience, I would suggest that they make their recommendations to Lincolnshire County Council about the situation. For folk living in our area are getting fed up with botched up remedies and jobs which in the end will cost tax payers more money than costed and expected.

I assume, not having walked on the path, that the surface is now well consolidated and would now suffice as a sub base.
If this is the case the most economical solution surely would now be to overband with a 6mm tarmac wearing course which shouldn't raise the finished level too much.
If levels are more critical, then the present surface would need scraping off, which would be more labour intensive and cost more .

If there is no hurry and to carry out a proper job, wait until contractors complete Dorrigan Close using Hot Rolled Asphalt. By way of an apology to compensate the residents this path could then be done FREE OF CHARGE to the Tax Payers. After all the CoUncil have had enough rates from these unfortunate residents, with very little given in return!!

I use the path every day and more and more of it seems to end up on my doormat, I am worried that I may be accused of theft as I have that much of it ,and the trail of muddy footprints is fairly damning.

Am I the only one who finds it quite slippery when its wet?

This footpath laid by the County Council is a disgrace to those using it. It is not up to the standard which the Footpaths Officer has claimed it to be and which needs to be rectified or completely resurfaced.
Residents who have been walking up and down this footpath this week have found in many areas that the yellow sand has been washed away. Where the springs are bubbling up, those areas and surrounding ground is sodden and quite boggy.
Stains from the colour of the sand are everywhere and this can bee seen on Long Leys Road. This entrance has had sand washed onto the road and is uneven and boggy too.
The situation has been reported to councillor Rob Parker who will be paying a visit to view the footpath this weekend on Sunday.

I think that the water freezing lifted wads of the path hence the foorprints starting again. Until the springs are 'diverted' I can't see many surfaces working long term. That said, even with this wet weather it is better than the full path of mud it used to be.

I use the footpath several times a week and think it is an absolute disgrace. During the snowy and icy weather it was extremely slippy and didn't thaw out for days. It is now a boggy mess with still very slippy sections due to the amount of water on the surface. I have nearly slipped several times and hate using it. As for the piles of dog mess that are all the way along it, it is unbelievable how thoughtless people can be. The sooner something is done about a permanent surface the better, I'm sure it will be cheaper in the long run than the claims for compensation that people may seek due to injuries caused by the terrible surface.

Mr Christopher Marsh is the Footpath Officer responsible for the footpath.
Please contact him on either 01522 782070 direct line
or at County Hall on 01522 552222
or his mobile on 07774 741525
Otherwise residents can ring councillor Robert Parker on 01522 880848.
Please ring them and voice your concerns and ask them to investigate this footpath.
The more people doing this will get the action required.
