NEW HOMES ON HOLD AS FIRM STAYS PUT
08:00 - 28 April 2008
Tough times and the "credit crunch" have forced a hi-tech Lincoln firm to put a relocation move on ice.
And e2v technologies in Carholme Road - which employs about 174 people - is also looking to shed 14 jobs.
The company had planned to move away from its current site and wanted to build around 110 houses and 158 apartments on it.
Bosses have told workers that the current state of the economy has led to a rethink at the business, which makes devices for the medical, aerospace, automotive and marine industries.
Andy Bennett, e2v's group marketing communications manager, said: "We have decided to put the planned site move on hold. We have done our sums and looked at the income we would get and the cost of moving and they don't look so favourable at the moment."
The company will consider requests for voluntary redundancy from all areas of the workforce.
The Institute of Directors county spokesman Paul Croft said: "With the UK economy growing at its slowest pace for three years and fresh evidence of a slowdown, it is not surprising that companies are re-assessing their investment plans.
"The economy is being buffeted by the financial shockwaves of the credit crunch."
The firm's plans to build on its 12-acre site were put on hold last autumn to allow councillors to take a closer look at the area.
Concerns were raised as to whether the area could cope with the extra volume of traffic - the site only has one entrance.
Carholme Road residents suggested that a second access should be created to reduce the risk of rush-hour bottlenecks.
