Drains

Postby byronh » Sat Nov 13, 2010 1:22 pm

Hello, just a quick question. Is anybody suffering with blocked drains? the small sqaure man hole cover on our drive is full to the brim and the down stairs toilet is backing up. Good job nobody uses it for a number 2.
Just wanted to know if anybody else is having the same issue or it is just us? Hope its nothing to do with the ongoing works on the estate.
Does any one have any recommendations of drain unblocking companies?

Cheers,

Simon

Drains are such an issue on the Estate I almost wonder whether it wouldn't be an idea to cost out some rods and see if the LLRA can buy some or we can get a ward budget loan for some - I'm sure they'd get some use! I'm surprised there have been no replies byronh. I can't help with a name because all my drain problems came within 'the buliders' problem' time and I've been OK since then. Hope you are sorted now.

The drainage system where I live is on a circuit and serves 7 houses. One of the drains was blocked a couple of years ago. One householder got Drainage Doctor out but he only blow jetted their drain but did not clear the blockage. I used rods to clear my drain but that did not clear the problem. Another neighbour when applying rods to his drains found the problem with his next door neighbour's. He was renting the property but his wife after using wipes was flushing them down the loo. These wipes had blocked up the system. They were cleared so from our experience, knowing this circuit system, should no longer be a problem.
Best to check out what kind of drainage system you have with the neighbours as the problem could be coming from one of their properties. Check also for wipes flushed down the loos!

the problem was wipes!! I think it was Steve posted last year about people putting fat/oil/grease down the drains but people flush all sorts that should go in a bin

I'm sorry but this is 21st Century GREAT Britain we live in not Grease, sorry Greece !!!!!

Our systems should be able to withstand most things that will go round the S bend. Truoble is we could have brand new drainage around the estate but an existing Victorian system just around the corner in Long Leys Road, likened a bit to roadworks on a motorway, when the lanes are reduced a bottleneck is created.

ho ho. Yup is not Greece but grease and wipes, cotton buds, cardboard, dead fish etc don't belong down a system where the guys at the other end only have to pull 'em out and put 'em in a bin!
But people will keep doing it and putting turkey fat etc down there and as with 'byronh' who may well be behaving himself, it is other people that cause him problems.
Just as a money saver though, anyone who finds themselves using less than 75 units a year with AWG, you'd probably be better off going on to their SOLOW rate if you're not already.

have been talking to residents nearby the e2v factory site on carholme road. the site is being developed of 200+ houses once moved out. the new drainage system will be added to the old victorian drainage that goes along carholme road. carholme road already floods. this will make matters worse. i wonder will the planning dept at city council ignore the coming problems. residents of st georges had better check their loops, etc, and what household drains link to each other, etc. if people are flushing cooking oil, baby wipes, etc, and when blockages occurr you will have drainage problems to resolve.
just a thought from an old gentleman

Unfortunately you get the impression that 200+ houses are no problem to the planners at City Hall, it's more like rub your hands together time ,that's over £250,000 additional annual revenue in rates !!

Hello all,

Thank you for your advice and information.

Our neighbour was having the same problem so we called out Anglian Water just to check the main sewer drain running down Manrico. After an inspection they found no issue their end and the problem was with the drains laid down by the developer.

We ended up paying for an unblocking service which cost us £70.50 (Very pleased with the service). We were told that although we were suffering from overflowing drains the blockage wasn’t on our property but the one at the end of the row before the main drain on Manrico and the cause of the blockage...wet wipes! We were just a victim because we were the lowest property on the row.

Our neighbour had informed us that he had the same issue around 3 years ago so looks like its an ongoing problem. Every one who I have spoken to on the estate has mentioned about the ongoing problems with the drains and that they are not wide enough to support the volume of drainage, this we cannot fix but I’d be grateful if people could refrain from flushing wet wipes and use the bin.

Regards,

Simon
