I was asked to comment on what the Conservative run Lincoln City Council are going to do over cremation charges. Rather that make a statement to the media I did this in response to what was published in the Lincolnshire Echo...
Cremation costs could rise by more than a third
Wednesday, January 21, 2009, 07:30
Bereaved families could be forced to pay an extra £133 to cremate a loved one in Lincoln if new plans are approved.
That's an increase of 37 per cent on the current cost to city residents of £362 – up to £495.
The new pricing scheme would apply to the City of Lincoln Council crematorium in Washingborough Road.
People living outside the city boundary currently pay £470 for the service but they too would have to pay £495 under the plans.
Some of the cash would go towards paying for equipment to cut harmful mercury emissions from the crematorium and the rest would be used to help meet council savings targets.
Independent city-based funeral director Jonathan Whiting said: "When people come to us it'll mean we have to pass on the bad news.
"If they do implement these charges I think it will put them up to the higher end of the fees.
"City residents aren't going to be too pleased about it."

Comment:
Those not being able to afford the cremation costs which the Conservative City Council are going to charge, there is always the new cemetery which replaces Baker's Field coming later on Long Leys Road.
But the problem there will be the flooding issue whereby graves would be accompanied by water after digging down two feet.
What is envisage is floating coffins.
But the city of Lincoln being once a Viking settlement, people could have a viking funeral on the Brayford, but then the Tory run Lincoln City Council would charge high prices for that too!
