COMMUNITY ANTI-SPEEDING DAY

Postby robcrack » Sat Jan 03, 2009 8:56 pm

As most locals are aware there is serious problem with speeding vehicles on Long Leys Road. Hopefully the speed reactive sign will have some sort of positive impact.
In the past I have seen community initiatives whereby the 'locals', especially children, work with the police during speed enforcement campaigns and my understanding is that if you, as a driver are nabbed for speeding you have a choice :

1. get a ticket.
2. listen to what the 'locals' view on your excess speed is.

I will seek advice and assistance from the Road Safety Partnership, but prior to this I'd like to hear what support this idea would have from the local community.

Is that the 'Speed Reduction Seminar'? I had a friend go on one rather than a ticket and they heard 'real life stories' from people affected by speeding motorists whether someone directly involved or one harrowing account from the mother of a driver killed. They were also shown some very hard hitting photographs which were almost 'look away' material. She did say though that for sometime afterwards she really thought about her driving, the hope being I suppose that if that thinking goes on long enough, new and better habits develop.
Can you tell us more yet? Is it a show of strength from the community? Would people need to stand up and speak? What would be expected of the kids?
Thanks Rob

No, nothing to do with the speed seminars - the idea is to deal with motorists there and then. I have spoken with the Principal Road Safety officer at the partnership re this - he will let me know what ideas they have to assist - it will be along the lines of local policing team, traffic officers and hopefully an education officer from the partnership at the scene. It would be along the lines of the 'community speed watch' schemes aleady used in the county but hopefully have more impact. There may also be some funding available for leaflets to be handed out to those who have the pleasure of being stopped. Media involvement too.
Clearly I can only organise such an event if it is what the locals want.

There are 2 speed reactive signs going up soon on LL road, one in each direction

It would appear that we have the reactive signs that we were promised.A good start to addressing the problem.I am keen on the idea of the community day you suggest Rob, count me in...

I noticed one coming up Long Leys Road near the bridge. Presumably (hopefully) they will extend lighting for the cemetery and it will be located further back i.e. BEFORE the cemetery gates. Is there one coming down - haven't noticed?

By noticing it, do you mean you got it to work by speeding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, just 'noticed' it!! Wasn't quick enough to glance at the speedo and see the mph so don't know if it's active yet or not. Anyone know if the setting for a flash is standard or can it be varied i.e. will we be flashed at 31?

I thought that there would be another sign on the other side of the road for traffic coming from the city.
Perhaps Rob Parker will let us know at the LLRA AGM?

This probably isn't the response that the sign is designed to elict, but a friend of a friend ( ) has been experimenting to see just how fast he can go before triggering a warning. He tells me he's currently managed 37mph.

Surely it should be triggered well below that sort of speed? Or as Deb asked, has it been activated yet?

I'm sure Cliff and Fiona H said at the AGM on 5 Feb that it activated at 34, so perhaps wasn't working when your friend of a friend of a ....went by!
If Fiona is reading perhaps she can confirm - or anyone else who has 'tested' it!

..............................And what will that achieve.

I'm sure the Installers would have tested it.

After all it does not tell you what speed you are doing just the fact you are exceeding 30mph.

Come under the bridge and reach 80mph it won't read any differently. This isn't going to stop people speeding just a total waste of money.

in the last week yet another vehicle met its end only 75 yds from the new device coming into lincoln.it left the bend at our field gate (new entrance to proposed cemetry) and demolised the 30 mph speed limit sign and through into our boundary hedge.this location has had other accidents in exactly the same spot,in the future this will be the public footpath to the cemetry.i hope the driver reported the damaged post as required by law? planning committee you have been warned!sorry if i have caused a slight break to your thread, but it is related to the sign and the need to have the warning on the approach into lincoln earlier than where it is. ps breaking the speed limit at 34 is an offence i thought.

I think Steve that it's just to confirm whether it is or is not activated yet. If no one confirms that, is it out of order and needs reporting?
Tony, agreed and exactly what I said that it should be located BEFORE the proposed cemetery. I think the reason it's where it is is presumably because they have electric feed from the lamp post but there are none further down as yet to site it on.

Tony:

I have posted your comments to our three ward and county councillors and saw Neil Murray on my way home from work today.
He has received my e-mail and will be acting upon what you have said.
Please contact him if you so wish.

John.

Seems to be little interest. With 4 traffic officers living in the local area I'm sure that a worthwhile community action day could have been arranged, however only if poeple had wanted it.........the tourist info offices closing, on the other hand......is going to have a huge impact on the Long Leys area.
