Cockerel noise

Postby Non » Tue Sep 21, 2010 1:45 pm

Has anybody else noticed the hideous sound of a crowing cockerel in St. Georges Park ?
A family in Mercer Drive started keeping chickens a few weeks ago , but now also have a crowing cockerel.
There is a restrictive covenant on the deeds which says no pigs, pigeons or poultry, but they don't seem to have noticed this.
I'm sure most people wouldn't mind the chickens so much as long as they don't start to smell or attract rats , but crowing cockerels
on an urban housing development are just not acceptable. It is totally ante-social. For anyone close by, trying to sell their house it could be a nightmare.
I know if I were viewing a property and heard a cockerel crow in a neighbouring garden ,I would be out the door like a shot.
Help !!!

Totally agree.

Barking dogs, car alarms and burglar alarms are bad enough but at least you can stop them, not so easy with a cockerel until it's time for the dinner table!!!

They are not even allowed to be kept on the allotments, maybe a call to the Council environmental dept could do the trick.

Residents on Long Leys Road were told by City Council that cockerels and chickens, etc, were not allowed in gardens. Only allowed in rural areas provided that there were no neighbours living nearby where such noises could be heard within the vicinity.
Suggest that this be invetsigated.

I have only just seen this posting. On my early morning trips down the steps I have heard it regularly and thought it was maybe the allotments at the top. But a householder? What are these people thinking? And not even on this site offering cheap fresh eggs!! Besides you don't even need a cockerel to get eggs they just improve the number laid.

At least I know now where the noise was coming from, and clear as anything from Higson Road so must be awful if you live near by and don't share its morning pattern.

Just to update everyone, a very helpful lady who is the Council environmental dept animal warden, offered to speak to the family who own the cockerel and suggested to them it would be a good idea to re-home it. They didn't want to upset anyone and have agreed to this. This was all done on an informal basis, as I really didn't want to go down the official complaint route. I hope this will be the end of it, but we will wait and see.
