Because of the icy weather in the last couple of days I have received a number of phone calls about problems on Carram Way, I understand there have been accidents on the bend and I have received requests for the highways department of the county council to grit and salt that road.
I have spoken to a senior highway officer who told me that at this stage in the winter there is no spare capacity to treat off the current gritting network because the gritter fleet is fully committed treating the priority gritting network.
The Lincolnshire County Council and the Highways Agency carry out precautionary salting on 3081km (1914 miles) of the county’s 8800km (5468 miles) of highways. Whilst not every road in the county can be gritted, over 35% of Lincolnshire’s roads are treated - which is higher than Government expectations. 43 priority network routes are covered - including all A and B roads - using our full complement of 43 vehicles. Therefore all resources are concentrated to keep this treated network passable with care.
The gritting schedule for this winter was agreed by the County Council in July and I am told that no amendments can be made in the current year. We did agree that every effort would be made for Carram Way to be included in next year’s schedule. But before that we have to deal with the added complication that Carram Way is still in the ownership of the developers and is not due to be adopted until next year. The Highways Officer I spoke to assures me that he will push for Carram Way to be on the advanced gritting route after adoption.
I intend to work with Highway officers and the developers to ensure that there is no further delay in the adoption of roads on St George’s Development.
