As the weather gets warmer don’t be a victim of crime
Open windows and doors may let the fresh air in but they also allow easy access and provide tempting opportunities for thieves who need just seconds to walk or reach in and take purses and other valuables from tables and worktops. Don’t give thieves an open invitation.
A determined burglar can get through the smallest of open windows. So, whenever you go out - no matter how long for, make sure you shut all windows and doors.

Try to follow the guidelines below to reduce your risk of becoming a victim of burglary or theft:
Lock all windows and doors and remove the keys to a safe place when you leave the house, even if just for a few minutes.
If you are at the rear of the house or in the garden always ensure the windows and doors at the front of the house are locked.
Do not leave valuables in sight or reach of any open windows.
Lock all downstairs windows at night.
Put away and secure all gardening equipment and children’s bikes etc. after use.
Use good quality locks on garages and sheds.
Ensure both locks and hinges on shed and garage doors are working properly and do not need repairing (ensure screws on latches and hinges cannot be undone easily from the outside.
Ensure you know what make and model your gardening tools are for identification purposes in the event that they are stolen. Mark up gardening equipment with your postcode. This should be done overtly with paint, paint pens or permanent markers where possible to make them less attractive to thieves as they are harder to re-sell

Holiday Checklist
Take a look at this before you go away. Help reduce the risk of your home being broken into by taking some simple home security measures.
Mark any valuables with your postcode followed by a house number or the first two letters of the house name.
Take photographs of all valuable items. This is particularly important for those which may be unsuitable for marking.
Cut the lawns before you go.
Cancel deliveries of milk, newspapers etc, discreetly - don’t announce your departure to a shop full of people. Only tell people who need to know you’re going away.
Make sure your house looks occupied. Closed curtains in the daytime makes it look as if no one is at home - ask a trusted neighbour to collect post, open and close curtains. It is worthwhile to get automatic time switches to switch lights and a radio on and off in downstairs rooms.
Don’t leave valuable items like televisions, videos or hi-fi visible through windows.
Lock the garage and shed with proper security locks, after putting all your tools safely away so they cannot be used to break into your house. If you have to leave a ladder out, put it on its side and lock it to a secure fixture with a ‘close-shackle’ padlock and heavy-duty chain.
Don’t have your home address showing on your luggage for the outward journey. Put this only on the inside of your cases.
Finally, lock all outside doors and windows. If you have a burglar alarm, make sure it is set - and that you have told the police who the key-holder is.
STUDENTS- take your valuables home during vacation periods. During term times most burglaries are committed through insecure doors and windows, and a burglar will prefer to use this method of entry as it is both quiet and quick. During the vacation, however, they are more prepared to use force to gain entry, as there are very few people around to see or hear them.
Remember that you can replace possessions but how do you replace your dissertation? Make sure that your coursework is backed up and stored separately to your computer.
