The hospital is open now but the new building is scheduled for completion at the end of the year and be in use by early Spring. When complete, the current hospital buildings will be vacated and moved to the new premises. The only change in users will be that females will now be taken. The users of the facility are those with 'challenging behaviours' and if you think of low, medium and secure units this unit is below all of those. As M.A.T. has said it will be well kept as indeed it is now and there is a likelihood that local residents may be able to use some of the facilities which will eventually be available including a small gym and cafe, seminar rooms and there will also be a drop in space for the local PCSO.
I agree with the other postings, docs and dentists are 10-30 minutes walk away depending on which one you use, the closest doctor probably going up Higson Steps and just past the Burton Road roundabout.
I have also heard that the green building is a Christian Plymouth Brethren building.
The main estate is split between two builders who have been taken over at various times as the build has commenced - David Wilson and Persimmon. Part of the DW site from Manrico over to new cemetery site has been adopted, the other half is under way, notices are out and roads/pavements marked for defects. Persimmon which start at the front of Long Leys were delayed adoption due to numerous takeovers when the whole process of laying the roads had to start all over again, the other Persimmon site is off Fulmen. The landscaping is another issue but it will be completed and has again been delayed because of changes in people on that function within DW homes. If there are drainage problems I don't know of them. Many new builds have that initial problem when rubble gets down drains and is then backed up by people putting stuff down the loos and sinks that should be put in a bin but the estate has been completed for some time now so all that should be sorted.
This site is run free of charge by one of the residents, there is a Residents' Association and many people will tell you of the convenience of living here just on the city boundary but within easy reach, especially if you are a walker, of green sites and both ends of the city. The bus service could be a lot better but is run by a company that also do school runs so you need to pick your time! We have a good relationship with the councils and councillors and have secured bins, benches, flower bulbs, a noticeboard (which will be installed soon) and have campaigned sucessfully to have the Higson Steps (shortcut to Burton Road) refurbed and lit and some of the muddiest 'natural' footpaths re stoned. At Christmas we have a free community Carol Service with mulled wine and mince pies and when the disused building (SEC) on Long Leys is sold off there is even a possibility for refurb of one of the old hospital buildings as a community centre (more on this will be posted shortly).
In short - buy now Heather!
