Big Lunch -Sunday 19th July

Postby fiona » Tue May 19, 2009 12:35 pm

Afternoon All,

Is anyone interested in taking part in the Big Lunch on Sunday 19th July. It is a nationwide event, run by mastercard. The idea behind it is that you get to know your neighbours in a street party style lunch.

Let me know if you are interested and if you are interested in helping me organise it.

All the best
Fiona

Hi Fiona
It sounds like a good idea. It would probably be easier to announce a venue/time and date, bring your own picnic and chair to meet up eg on the grass at the top of Manrico Drive or the village "green" on Long Leys Road.

Unfortunately I believe it will be the few usual people who have a community spirit who will turn up. Also don't forget only 10% of the area have access to this site.

Set up big tables, bring food to share? HOWEVER, let's have the date or day right!!! If you want to go with this, Pete is doing a flyer for the 'Open Meeting' very soon so if you'd like to go for it state a place/time/what to do and he may be able to mention it on there or we can deliver two together. If it's Sunday 21st that's Father's Day.

It is the 19th July according to the website

http://www.thebiglunch.com/

Most of us are shy, many of us lead single lives and even when we are together often go our own way. We all know about the problems in our society and don't need to be preached at about them. But inside almost everyone there is a notion that despite our differences, the ties that bind us are important.
The shared enjoyment of eating together, laughter, play, music and conversation bring us together and for all the fact that we are so fabulously different in our outlook and experience on many things, we know a simple truth - together we are strong. Wouldn't it be great if for just one day we remind ourselves about all that is good about us and bring about a moment that ignites a spark?

It may be tricky, it may feel slightly uncomfortable to start with. It takes a bit of courage to stop being a stranger. But think of the prize - to be able to walk down the street and into the wider neighbourhood and realise how many good people there are: people who, acting together, can create a real sense of community - a word that in Latin means; "together, in gift".

So... if you're up for it, try growing something, making something or generally getting stuck in for the Big Lunch. No one is going to tell you how to do it as your ideas will be perfect for you. If you want any prompting we've gathered together lots of ideas that might set you on the road for a day that at worst might be fun and at best could start to change your life in unexpected ways!

It's your party. All we're doing is giving you an excuse but if you need more than that, then there is a remarkable reason to hold your Big Lunch.

Thanks for copying that here Grahame - I just looked you up to see where you lived in the community and you're BT. Me too, still hanging in there!! Anyway I think we should go for it folks. The worst that can happen is that a few friendly locals have lunch together, the best that lots of locals have lunch together. Fiona has started us off so lets throw around some ideas and nearer the time I'll print some posters from the website Grahame mentioned.
WHERE?: Village green (pros:it belongs to all of us)? Flat area by the flats(cons: we need to get permission from all the residents)?
STYLE?: Loads of paste tables/garden tables with chairs? Garden brollies? Picnic rugs? Drop at venue before start to avoid loads of cars trying to park up?
FOOD?: If you come each bring enough for 2/4/6 people? Mark any plates etc
TIME?: Arrive at 12/1 to tuck in at 12.30/1.30? Bring plate, cutlery, drink. Volunteers beforehand to set up
ENTERTAINMENT?: Anyone have a star turn - no buzzers allowed only applause!

And so it goes on...!!

if you are struggling for a location,it may not be the best, but our field outside can be a used as a venue prior to its new use as a cemetry.i can put on an electric supply and access can be via our garden vigo close or longleys rd.

Tony you're a gem, that's wonderful, the village green is split down the middle. With power we can maybe have some music and jig around if we feel like it and the kids will be safe and away from the road and can maybe bring balls/frisbees whatever. As a further favour is there space in your garage if we started bringing chairs/tables/brollies the day before set up?

Hi Guys,

Yes you are right ,my mistake it is the 19th July. I was thinking that no-one was interested but looks like I was wrong, which i am very pleased about. i ahve just returned this evening from Holidays so sorry that it appeared i was not about or not answering.

So how do we want to go about it. Bbq and people bring a dish and a drink or some kind extra.

What do you think the best way to go is???? Anyone got any connections with the forces as they are very kind at lending tents and tables for non -profit events. I will happy print out enough leaflets but due to illness will struggle to delivery them all. Any volunetters to help delivery them???

Tony and Carols idea of the field is great if its dry, or we can have words with residents and see about closing one of the roads and setting the tables and chairs up on there. I suggest Maidment or Mercer middle section as they are flat and would cause the least disruption.

I will bring Food wise:-

Chicago Soft Rock Pie
Baileys Cheesecake
Lemon Chicken
Diet Coke
and a Rose or Medium Sweet White.

Suggest we ask people to bring their own plates, cultery and glasses.

I have a banquet paper roll for covering tables somewhere.

Fi have asked Pete to put a note on the 'Open Meeting' flyer and to add see posters, ring you, go to this web site if that's OK - then LLRA will be delivering! Open Meeting date not fixed until we have a venue, Pyewipe have refused us a freebie so probably County Offices.

I would go for folk bringing enough food for them plus and also their drink and eating utensils i.e. a massive (or very small!!) buffet, but if someone has a large BBQ you could advertise that too and people could bring and cook their own food and throw in some accompanimenmts. It relies on someone providing gas or charcoal too. If it's just a bit drizzly garden brollies will cope, it it chucks it down probably no one will want to come but there'll be no waste as it won't be an entrance charge where food has been bought in advance. I would go with the field rather than trying to close roads and disrupt not only residents but the possibility of emergency service vehicles having to turn round and come up the other way. Don't know that such a thing would even be allowed anyway. Keeping it simple it'll be a case of 'this is happening please bring yourselves and some food and join in!'

You have my number if you want to chat it through...

I don't think residents would mind a road closure for a day. Maidment would be ideal - it has a grassed area for little ones or picnics, easily accessible for wheelchairs and those not so steady on their feet, it has an even surface and is right in the middle of the estate so people will notice it - a proper good old fashioned street party! Also there are only a few residents on it and I for one wouldn't mind parking my car elsewhere for one day!

It's just my opinion but I think the street party is more in keeping with the idea - plus if it does drizzle we wont get bogged down! What do others think?

Oh Michelle, I'm so pleased to hear your comments in fact I was wondering if maybe we could get together for a coffee and chat about it. I would love to take you up on your very kind offer of helping get this off the ground.

Michelle/Fi can you check with residents as soon as and then I'll ask Pete to put that as the venue on the flyer. If a road's to close then I agree that Maidment is best not only for the green but that there's a turn round above and below without reversing and returning the way you came! May be worth checking with the police too - it's possible that since it's a national thing they will be able to give you a quick answer. Or if PC Rick Mosley is reading this he can get an official answer?

So flyer says "Get together for the Big Lunch on Sunday 19th July xxpm on Maidment Drive, St Georges. Look out for the posters, ring Fiona on xxxxxx or see the community website http://www.stgeorgesonline.co.uk for details"

Is that going to be OK, obviously with the xs filled in!? There's not much room, we're keeping it small to keep cost as low as possible but the posters from the National site can say everything you need. The flyers do the whole LLRA area but this won't be appropriate if this is just St George's but your call.
