Market Deeping!!! We're a city - something wrong there!!

Claranet is nothing to do with speed - he just loves it for it's customer friendliness. Living in Burton with .5 speeds, dial up is almost as good and he's sticking to it!

i know!

I do not know the technicalities behind WiMax are (cue James input) but if it could reach Burton Waters that could be another source of revenue, thus making it a better prospect?

Hi Matt / all

The iPlate is handy, but all it does is cut the wiring link for the bell wire at the phone socket, which reduces noise pick-up from your phone extensions - the bell wire isn't needed with modern phones, which do everthing using just two of the four (or possibly six) connections that phone sockets have.

I certainly wouldn't endorse fiddling with BT's master socket, but apparently you can save yourself the cost of the iPlate "filter" by simply disconnecting the bell wire at the back of the socket (I'm told it's the solid orange wire to terminal 3, although obviously I've never looked).

Currently, I'm still dazzled by the blistering 4.5-5.5 Mbps I'm getting (up from 2.2), but would still consider a Virgin broadband/media package on cable if it was available in the area (sorry Deb!).

Regards
Gary

No worries matey - I'm not on commission! Packages can be very good value but the idea is to tie you in so always worth pricing different bits separately and keeping up to date with what's out there when money's tight. You would be amazed at how many people who have to be on BT (like us) but who still have the basic 01/02 weekend calls when you can add evening for free if you sign up for 12 months. My 12 months was up last month and I just signed again. Evening changing to 7 - 7 rather than 6 - 6 is annoying though. For info anyone (but check!) basic w.e. £11.54, w.e. and evening £14.53, anytime £16.53. Check your bill on line and add up your usual calls and you'll soon know if you are going to be better off just paying a monthly fee rather than rental and calls. You may save money until choice of provider is available.
Bizarre how speeds vary. I had 5plus on Maidment but at that particular point yesterday had only 3.75 though to be honest for what I do I don't think I'd notice!
Good pointer on the bell wire, lets face it if you cut the wrong one it won't blow up and you can then just get the i-plate!

No it won't but you run the risk of disconecting your phone line! and then the embaressing phone call to follow (or not because you just broke it!) But its relatively easy :o) The bell wire is orange/white and although you don't necessarily have to disconect it from the master socket you can disconnect it from your internal wiring perfectly legitimately which can help. Although, I think BT give them away for free with only the P&P payable!

Your right about looking for a good deal Deb's thats why I thought the idea about Virgin was worth a mention. They will foot the entire bill of the install if they get enough "potential" customers. You dont have to definately sign up, just say that you might!

yes I was having a bit of a 'Hurt Locker' moment there!

How about, if Virgin do it, you ask for some flyers to deliver that show the deals and give a number/email/web site or whatever to register interest. They are in Lincoln, my friend, when he was on Cross O Cliff hill had them - though maybe that could technically be outside the city boundary? Not sure.

We just about get the streets and footpaths to an acceptable level apart from the latest set of reinstatement markings AGAIN and once and for all when the estate is adopted, no doubt Virgin will then think of coming along and rip the paths up.

We should tell Virgin to get lost, they should have had their ducts laid when the estate was built.

I have some flyers all done so ill start folding and delivering soon! According to my contact the planners have earmarked 320 houses in our area..just need to find out where they all are.

basically, the flyer is exactly as deb says, if you interested and want to register interest you just send me an email with the road you live on in the message body and I pass it on to Virgin.

Spot on... Pull the orange pair as you only need the blues to run a modern phone.

I had to test the I-Plate for work, pulling the oranges from your master works better than using an I-Plate!!

Also run your router from the master socket and not the slave sockets in your house as the internal wiring is crappy and adds noise thus reducing speed.

Cheers

I would love it if we could get Virgin Media on this estate as I do prefer it.

But some potentially good news, i noticed that Sky must have unbundled the local BT exchange as we can now get their offer of the "Free Broadband" in our area finally, rather than thinking we can get it and end up paying $17 a month for their other version Sky Connect.

Just thought i'd post i case anyone's interested.
