The British nation in the early days of World War Two thought that after the Dunkirk affair the shores of England would have been invaded by Nazi Germany - after all, Adolf Hitler was prepared to conquer those countries opposing him.
Then later came the Battle of Britain which took to the skies and pilots of the RAF took on the mighty German Luftwaffe. Fortunaley, Hitler decided another tactic to bring the British people to their knees.
The Blitz failed but killed many civilians.
Then the Third Reich turned on Russia with a vengence. But Germany because of its expansion, failed to complete its mission making the same mistakes similar to that of what France did in the 19th century.
The Battle of the Bulge was the war of tanks but the German Army ran out of fuel for any victory to be accomplished.
Operation Overlord was meticulously planned by the Allied Forces and finally D Day was given the go ahead where Allied troops landed on the French coast on the 6th June 1944.
To celebrate the anniversary of this famous day where Europe began to break free from the shackles of Nazi tyranny, the Friends of Metheringham invite you their "1940s Dance and Big Band Night" featuring The Ockbrook Big Band from Derbyshire, a 16 piece band made famous in their own right for wearing authentic GI uniforms.
Come and soak into the tunes from Glenn Miller,County Bassie, Duke Ellington, and Tommy Dorsey.
Listen to the songs that were sung by Vera Lynn and Frank Sinatra. And jitta bug and dance your heart away that will breath life into your soul asking for more.
The venue will be at the WW2 gymnasium at the Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre, near the village of Martin, Lincoln, on Saturday, 6th June 2009.
Dancing begins from 8 pm and you are invited to dress in 1940s style (optional) either miltary or civi and swing in the mood.
Tickets cost £16.50 which includes supper. A license bar is avialable for those thirsty.
