Reidents on Oakleigh Drive, Long Leys Road and on Westelys Croft were subjected to loud screams and noise coming from the Ornamental Pomd last night on the West Common. During the course of the evening there were torches flashing and torches were shone into the back windows from youths walking about the Common.
The fist call to the Police was at 7.00pm for them to investigate. WERA were contacted as the noise could be heard over there. WERA rang the Police at 7.30pm and after that one of their committee members rang me and ask me to take a look.
Whilst walking on the Common, I met several dog walkers from St Georges Park and from the Long Leys Road area. They were disturbed by the screams coming from girls and the noise. Two of the residents said that the same happened last Saturday and the council workers had to clear up the mess the youths had left - a large bill for working on a Sunday!
But last night was the tops.
Call were made to the Police at 8.30pm from other sources and I rang them at 8.45pm and 9.15pm for a report.
The Police could not attend as they were too busy in the city centre dealing with binge drinking, alcohol behavior problems and incidents that were taking place in the city centre.
What was happening on the West Common was not given any priority. George W and myself made further complaints and finally they paid the youths a visit at the Ornamental Pond. The youths were asked by the Police at 9.45pm to leave the West Common because of residents' complaints about the noise and the screaming.
However, no names were taken.
It took two and three quarter hours for the Police to respond and to take any action.
The pond has had beer cans and bottles thrown in. The place is saturated with beer cans and bottles including wine bottles by the seat there.
I was ask to take a look at the pond area this morning which I did. Found what was described to me over the telephone.
WERA have asked that the area be cleaned up today - just to let you know the tax payer will be paying for this.
The incident number is 328 dated 4/10/2008. Between 15 to 20 youths were involved last night.
