The Friends of Metheringham Airfield are celebrating the 70th birthday of 106 Squadron this year after it was reformed in June 1938. They are also celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force.

To honour this famous Lancaster bomber squadron, a cake is being baked for the Open Day on Sunday, 4th May, part of the May Bank Holiday weekend.

The gates will open at 10.30am and admission is £7.00 per car.

What will be a special day for the Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre at Martin Moor, Metheringham., Lincoln, will include war veterans who served in 106 Squadron at RAF Metheringham during World War Two.

It will be a trip going down Memory Lane as there will be WW2 military vehicles on display, exhibitions depicting the life and times during the war years, and classic cars. There are also model aircraft from WW1 todate being shown in the WW2 gymnasium.

Members of the Allied Forces Group will be there dressed in WW2 uniforms and interacting with visitors. They will be inviting visitors to experience bombing raids by the German Luftwaffe, with sound effects, in a genuine WW2 Air Raid Shelter where folk will be sitting and standing together which was normal in a cramped public shelter.

Personnel from RAF Digby will be showing their minature WW2 Operations Table where the full size one is based at their museum together with artifacts.

The RAF Regiment from nearby RAF Waddington will be displaying their military equipment for people to look at, touch, and hold.

A Prize Draw will take place during the afternoon and two top prizes amongst many others are a flying lesson in a Cessna aircraft and £106 cash in celebrating the birthday of 106 Squadron.

One special event for the Open Day will be the BBMF Lancaster bomber from RAF Coningsby giving a flying display to honour 106 Squadron.
