SWANPOOL PLAN IN TV SPOTLIGHT
08:00 - 30 November 2007
Controversy over the development of housing on Swanpool will feature in a prime-time television documentary tonight.
The Tonight with Trevor McDonald programme, on ITV1 at 8pm, will look at the aftermath of the flooding of June and July.
The main focus of the piece, called Hung Out to Dry, will be the communities in South Yorkshire and Gloucestershire which suffered the brunt of the damage.
But it will make reference to a stark warning made by Environment Agency chairman Baroness Young in September on Lincoln's Swanpool site.
As reported in the Echo, she said plans by developer Taylor Wimpey, supported by Lincoln City Council, to build 4,500 homes there were 'unacceptable' because of the risk of flooding.
The Echo revealed yesterday how a report by planning inspectors into the East Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy appeared to have ruled out development on 80 per cent of the site because it is prone to flooding.
And they also questioned the need for an eastern bypass.
John, as ever reporting.
